The Matthew Emrick Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded on an annual basis to two graduating eighth grade students from North Middle School. Matt, known to North students as Mr. Emrick and Mr. Eminem, was a mentor and friend to many. He often encouraged the students who looked up to him to never give up. Matt overcame much adversity in his life and believed that his students could do the same. The Matthew Emrick Memorial Scholarship Fund honors two students who exemplify Matt’s passion, strength, and perseverance. Twelve students are nominated by the eighth grade teachers at North to write an essay discussing a challenge or hardship they had to overcome and what lesson they learned from their experience. Matt used his experience in overcoming adversity to help and inspire others. It is our hope that with this scholarship money, students will feel more confident in high school and will be inspired to use their challenging experience to help others and continue Matt’s legacy.
Scholarship Recipients will be—
One(1) eighth grade boy and one(1) eighth grade girl
Essays will be no more than two(2) pages in length
Essays will be judged according to how well they express overcoming a challenge or hardship.
Scholarship recipients will be selected by Matthew’s family based on a review of their essays. Spelling and grammar will not be a consideration in the selection of recipients.
The $1200 award for each recipient will be used as follows:
$400.00 for clothes
$800.00 for High School fees (ex. Sports, yearbook, elective and lab fees, organizations and clubs)
